Overview
Tejo, formerly known as Ribatejo, follows the Tagus River through central Portugal. The region ranges from fertile alluvial plains that once supplied bulk wine to stonier, hillier sites now producing more serious wines. It is one of Portugal's oldest viticultural areas, shaped by a warm continental climate and the moderating influence of the river.
Red wines are typically soft and juicy, led by Castelão, Trincadeira, and Touriga Nacional, while Fernão Pires and Arinto provide crisp whites. International varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah are also common in modern blends.
