Overview
Porto is not a vineyard region in the strict sense, but the historic heart of the Port trade. The city sits at the mouth of the Douro River, where wine has been shipped since at least the 17th century. Traditional lodges line the Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront, storing and aging casks of Port in cool, humid cellars.
Although grapes are grown upstream in the Douro, the Porto name identifies the fortified wines themselves, including Ruby, Tawny, Late Bottled Vintage, and Vintage Port. The humid Atlantic climate of the lodges is ideal for long, oxidative aging that shapes the wine's renowned complexity.
