Dão

Overview

The Dão was demarcated in 1908, making it Portugal's first protected region for non-fortified wines. It sits on a granite plateau ringed by the Serra da Estrela, Serra do Caramulo, and Serra da Nave, which shield it from Atlantic extremes and create a temperate continental climate. Vineyards lie mainly between 400 and 800 meters on low-fertility granitic and schist soils.

Dão reds are structured yet refined, built around Touriga Nacional and often compared to Burgundy for their elegance and aging potential. Encruzado leads the whites, producing full-bodied, mineral wines that develop beautifully in bottle.
