Overview
Beira Interior lies in the rugged eastern reaches of central Portugal, bordering Spain. The mountainous relief, with granite and schist soils and vineyards at 400 to 800 meters, creates a continental climate of hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The region is one of Portugal's more remote wine frontiers.
The altitude and diurnal shifts preserve acidity in both reds and whites. Tinta Roriz, Bastardo, Marufo, and Touriga Nacional lead the reds, while Síria, Arinto, Malvasia Fina, and Rabo de Ovelha provide fresh, aromatic whites.
