Tunisia is one of the oldest wine-producing countries in North Africa, with a history dating back to Phoenician and Roman settlers. Vineyards are concentrated in the north, where Mediterranean breezes and mountainous terrain moderate the intense heat.
Carignan, Syrah, and Mourvèdre are widely planted, along with the local Magon grape. Tunisian wine is mostly consumed domestically, but a small export market is reviving interest in the country's ancient Mediterranean wine traditions.
