Overview
Béja lies in the greener northwest of Tunisia, where the Medjerda valley meets the forested Kroumirie and Tell Atlas ranges. The district is home to the historic Thibar AOC, whose vineyards were developed around the Saint-Joseph farm and agricultural school founded in the late 19th century. Higher altitude and inland exposure give the zone a cooler, more continental character than the coastal appellations.
Red, rosé, and white wines are produced here, with Muscat-based whites and sparkling wines among the most distinctive. Clay-loam and alluvial soils, often underlain by limestone, store winter moisture for the dry summer. The combination of altitude, adequate rainfall, and old vine heritage makes Béja a source of fresh, aromatic wines.
