Overview
Mornag is the heart of Tunisia's largest Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, a broad sweep of hillside vineyards roughly 40 kilometres south of Tunis. Viticulture here stretches back to the 8th century BC and the heyday of Carthage; the appellation even takes its name from Magon, the celebrated Carthaginian agronomist whose treatises shaped ancient Mediterranean farming. The Mediterranean Sea moderates the climate, shielding the vines from the fiercest Sirocco winds while sea breezes preserve freshness.
The appellation produces red, white, and rosé wines across two tiers, Mornag AOC and Grand Cru Mornag. Clay, limestone, and sandy soils support both regional Mediterranean varieties and international grapes. Modern estates and the large Vignerons de Carthage cooperative continue to refine the region's reputation for generous, food-friendly wines.
