Bulgaria was one of the ancient world's great wine lands, with Thracian tribes producing wine for ritual and trade more than three thousand years ago. The country enjoys a mix of continental and maritime climates, with fertile valleys stretching from the Black Sea to the Danube River.

Indigenous grapes such as Mavrud, Rubin, and Pamid headline the reds, while Dimyat and Misket produce aromatic whites. After the upheavals of the twentieth century, Bulgarian wine is experiencing a renaissance, as small estates focus on quality, tradition, and the unique character of their native varieties.
