Black Sea

Overview

The Black Sea region runs along Bulgaria's eastern coast from Varna in the north to Burgas in the south. A mild maritime climate, with cool breezes, warm summers, and long, gentle autumns, favors white grape varieties that retain acidity while achieving full ripeness. The area is the eastern of Bulgaria's two large PGI zones.

Dimyat and Misket Varnenski are the traditional local whites, while Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay dominate international plantings. Some Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are also grown near the coast. Wineries in Pomorie, Varna, and Burgas produce mineral-driven whites, sparkling wines, and fresh rosés.
