Struma Valley

Overview

The Struma Valley follows the Struma River from Blagoevgrad south to Melnik near the Greek border. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, making it one of Bulgaria's warmest wine areas. It falls within the southern PGI zone and includes the historic Melnik PDO.

Shiroka Melnishka Loza, also known as Broad-Leaved Melnik, is the area's legendary indigenous red, famously admired by Winston Churchill. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also important, while the nearby Sandanski area produces aromatic whites. The dramatic sandstone pyramids around Melnik add a striking backdrop to the valley's traditional wineries.
