Southeastern Bulgaria

Sakar

Southeastern Bulgaria's hilly wine enclave, where red wines gain power from sun, wind, and ancient terroirs.

Overview

Sakar is a hilly area in southeastern Bulgaria, part of the broader Thracian PGI zone and recognized as a distinct PDO since Bulgaria joined the European Union. The region sits near the borders with Greece and Turkey and is characterized by rolling hills, warm summers, and cooling winds that help grapes retain freshness.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mavrud, and Rubin dominate plantings, producing rich, structured reds with dark fruit and spice. The area's long growing season and varied exposures have attracted modern investment, and several estates now combine wine production with rural tourism and traditional Thracian cuisine.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA powerful red that shows cassis, cedar, and firm tannins from the hilly terroir.
  • MerlotA round, plummy red that softens blends and performs well on the warmer slopes.
  • MavrudThe indigenous Bulgarian red that adds dark fruit and spice to Sakar blends.
  • RubinA local Syrah-Nebbiolo cross contributing color and aromatic complexity.
