Thracian Valley

Overview

The Thracian Valley is Bulgaria's most famous wine region, stretching around Plovdiv, Haskovo, and the Sakar Mountains near the Greek border. Viticulture here dates back more than six thousand years to the ancient Thracians, who associated wine with Dionysus and ritual rebirth. Today the region is the country's largest PGI zone for red wine production.

Mavrud, a powerful indigenous red with notes of blackberry, leather, and spice, is the region's signature grape. Rubin, a Bulgarian cross of Syrah and Nebbiolo, produces rich, velvety reds. Wineries such as Villa Yustina, Midalidare, and Bessa Valley have helped raise the region's international profile, while some producers continue the Thracian tradition of fermenting wine in clay amphorae.
