Danubian Plain

Overview

The Danubian Plain covers northern Bulgaria between the Danube River and the Stara Planina mountain range. Towns such as Ruse, Pleven, Suhindol, and Svishtov have produced wine since Roman times, and the region is now officially the northern of Bulgaria's two large PGI zones.

Gamza, known as Kadarka in Serbia and Hungary, is the region's most distinctive indigenous red, producing light-bodied, spicy wines with bright cherry and raspberry notes. International varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Riesling are also widely planted, alongside Muscat Ottonel and the local white Misket Vrachanski.
