Howell Mountain

Overview

Howell Mountain was the first sub-AVA established in Napa Valley, in 1984. Vineyards sit between roughly 1,400 and 2,600 feet elevation, entirely above the fog line, which gives the AVA more sunshine and warmer afternoons than the valley floor. Volcanic soils of red clay, ash, and rocky tufa force vines to struggle, producing small berries with concentrated flavors.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape, producing deeply colored, tannic wines with black fruit, graphite, and herbal notes. Zinfandel, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are also important, particularly from old vineyards on the mountain's slopes. Howell Mountain wines are known for their intensity, structure, and long aging potential.
