Overview
Bairrada lies in central Portugal near the Atlantic, with a strong maritime climate that brings mild, rainy winters and cool summers tempered by sea breezes. Clay-limestone soils, locally known as barros, give the region its name and contribute to the firm acidity of its wines. The region produces roughly two-thirds of Portugal's traditional-method sparkling wine.
Baga is Bairrada's signature red grape, a late-ripening variety with thick skins, high acidity, and firm tannins that can age for decades. Sparkling wines, often from Baga or Maria Gomes, are increasingly celebrated, while international varieties add blending depth.
