Egypt was one of the first centers of ancient winemaking, with tomb paintings showing vineyards and wine production more than three thousand years ago. Today, however, modern viticulture is limited by the country's hot, dry climate and scarce agricultural water.
Most Egyptian grapes are grown for table fruit or raisins, with only a handful of wineries producing wine for local consumption. The industry remains small, but it carries the legacy of one of humanity's oldest wine civilizations.
