Fayoum Oasis Vineyards
Fayoum Depression, Egypt

Fayoum Oasis

A fertile desert depression southwest of Cairo, where artesian water supports a small but ambitious wine scene.

Overview

The Fayoum Oasis lies in a broad depression southwest of Cairo, fed by the Bahr Yussef canal and a network of ancient lakes. The region's rich agricultural history extends to experimental vineyards that benefit from fertile soils, abundant sunshine, and access to irrigation water from the Nile system.

Fayoum's wineries are small and boutique, often combining wine with tourism, farm stays, and local cuisine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay are the main varieties, produced in tiny quantities and sold mainly to visitors and the Cairo market.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red that gains depth from the oasis's warm days and cool nights.
  • MerlotA round, approachable red that softens blends and performs well on fertile soils.
  • SyrahA spicy, dark-fruit red suited to the dry, sunny oasis climate.
  • ChardonnayA white variety producing fresh, fruit-driven wines for the local market.
