Alexandria

Egypt's coastal wine corridor, where sea breezes soften the desert heat along the Alexandria desert road.

Overview

Alexandria and the coastal strip to the west of the Nile Delta offer Egypt's most maritime-influenced viticultural conditions. The Mediterranean tempers summer temperatures and provides humidity, while the desert road west of the city links Cairo to a string of emerging estates.

This corridor is home to some of Egypt's best-known premium labels, including those grown around Khatatba and the wider Alexandria hinterland. The style is ripe and generous, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay leading plantings and producers experimenting with Mediterranean clones.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA full-bodied red with cassis and mint notes from coastal-influenced sites.
  • MerlotA plush, fruit-driven red that softens blends and ripens reliably near the coast.
  • SyrahA spicy, dark-fruit red that handles the heat and coastal humidity well.
  • ChardonnayA white variety producing ripe, tropical wines with refreshing acidity.
