Overview
The Monticello AVA is Virginia's oldest and most prominent wine region, established in 1984. It stretches across the central Piedmont along the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with elevations from about 600 to 2,200 feet. The mountains protect the region from the worst weather while cool evening breezes descend from the ridges, preserving acidity in the grapes.
Viognier is widely considered the signature white, producing aromatic, full-bodied wines with peach, honeysuckle, and apricot. Cabernet Franc leads the reds, while Merlot, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, and Petit Manseng are also successful. The region has gained national acclaim for both still and sparkling wines, embodying what the Virginia Wine Board calls Old World grace and Southern grit.
