Ethiopia is famous for tej, a traditional honey wine fermented with gesho bark, which has been enjoyed for centuries across the Horn of Africa. Grape wine, by contrast, is a much newer and smaller part of the country's drinking culture.
A few small producers have begun cultivating vines in the highlands around Addis Ababa, taking advantage of altitude and volcanic soils. Production remains limited, but Ethiopia offers a fascinating example of wine culture adapting to ancient local traditions.
