Wollo Vineyards
Wollo, northern Ethiopian highlands

Wollo

The ancient home of tej, where honey wine and highland traditions predate modern viticulture.

Overview

Wollo is a historic region in the northern Ethiopian highlands, a landscape of rugged mountains, ancient monasteries, and deep cultural traditions. While modern grape vineyards are limited here, Wollo is part of the heartland of tej, the honey wine flavored with gesho leaves that has been Ethiopia's national drink for centuries.

Today, a few adventurous growers are exploring high-altitude viticulture in Wollo and neighboring areas, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other international varieties alongside indigenous crops. The region represents both Ethiopia's ancient wine heritage and its future possibilities at the edge of the highlands.
