Overview
Bishoftu, formerly known as Debre Zeyit, sits on a highland plateau dotted with crater lakes less than an hour's drive southeast of Addis Ababa. The town's elevation and lake-moderated climate have long made it a center for Ethiopian viticulture, including the original operations that evolved into Awash Winery.
Today, Bishoftu remains an important wine hub, with nearby vineyards supplying grapes to major producers and a handful of smaller projects exploring premium possibilities. The region focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay, often blended into soft, fruity wines for the capital's restaurants and hotels.
