Zürich Vineyards
North-central Switzerland, around Lake Zürich and the Limmat valley

Zürich

German-speaking Switzerland's largest wine canton, where Pinot Noir and Müller-Thurgau meet indigenous Räuschling.

Overview

The canton of Zürich is the largest wine producer in German-speaking Switzerland, with more than 600 hectares of vineyards spread around Lake Zürich and into the surrounding hills. Lake Zürich and the Limmat river moderate temperatures, while the Föhn brings extra warmth in cooler years.

Pinot Noir leads plantings, followed by Müller-Thurgau and the historic local white grape Räuschling, sometimes called the Zürich vine. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc add modern variety, and the region's diverse soils of moraine, molasse, schist, and limestone create a wide stylistic range.

Key Varietals

  • Pinot NoirKnown locally as Blauburgunder, this red delivers elegant cherry fruit and earthy mineral notes.
  • Müller-ThurgauA fragrant early-ripening white with apple, elderflower, and gentle herbal character.
  • RäuschlingAn indigenous Zürich white producing crisp, high-acid wines with floral and citrus aromas.
  • ChardonnayA modern white that shows ripe orchard fruit and clean acidity across Zürich's varied soils.
