Znojmo

Western Moravia's aromatic white wine capital, where cool winds shape crisp Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.

Overview

The Znojmo wine sub-region is the westernmost of Moravia's four wine areas, centered on the historic royal town of Znojmo. Cold winds from the nearby highlands and the river valleys of the Dyje, Jevišovka, and Jihlava create a distinctive climate with sunny days and cool nights that preserve aromatic freshness in the grapes.

The region is known for crisp, aromatic white wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Müller-Thurgau, and Riesling. The VOC Znojmo appellation protects wines made from these varieties when they express a typical regional character. Red wines are less common but include Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent.

Key Varietals

  • Sauvignon BlancA zesty, herbaceous white that is the star of the Znojmo VOC appellation.
  • Grüner VeltlinerA peppery, fresh white that thrives in Moravia's cool continental climate.
  • RieslingA high-acid aromatic white with citrus and floral notes from the region's cooler sites.
  • BlaufränkischA spicy, medium-bodied red known locally as Frankovka.
