Zemgale

Overview

Zemgale is Latvia's southern breadbasket, a flat to gently rolling plain drained by the Lielupe River and its tributaries. Sheltered from the sea and sitting at the country's lowest elevations, it records some of Latvia's warmest summer temperatures and longest growing seasons. The Latvian Institute of Horticulture at Dobele has long tested fruit varieties here, making Zemgale the center of Latvian apple and berry breeding.

The region's slightly warmer autumns give cold-hardy red hybrids such as Zilga and Rondo their best shot at full ripeness, while apple orchards and berry plantations support a lively fruit-wine and cider industry. Drainage is important on the low-lying plain, but the fertile soils reward careful site selection.
