Zakarpattia

Overview

Zakarpattia, also known as Transcarpathia, is Ukraine's westernmost wine region, tucked into a basin surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. The mountains shield the area from cold northern winds, creating a milder, sunnier microclimate than the rest of the country. Vineyards climb between 300 and 700 metres on hillsides and volcanic foothills, with the town of Berehove serving as the historic wine capital.

The region has long been known as the land of white wines, though red varieties have ripened increasingly well in recent years. Soils are a distinctive mix of clay, volcanic tuff and andesite-basalt substrates, often enriched by mineral springs. Hungarian, Slovak and Romanian wine traditions overlap here, giving Zakarpattia a unique position in Ukrainian viticulture.
