Overview
Yamagata was home to the first winery in the Tohoku region, established in 1892, and today counts around 15 to 17 producers clustered along the Mogami River basin. Sheltered by the Ōu Mountains to the east and the Asahi Mountains to the west, the region experiences cold, snowy winters and cool summers with strong day-to-night temperature shifts during harvest. It was granted Geographical Indication status in 2021, underscoring its growing reputation for quality.
The basin's free-draining, clay-gravel soils on volcanic and sedimentary bedrock suit a wide range of grapes. Delaware is Yamagata's signature variety and the prefecture leads Japan in its production, while Muscat Bailey A ranks second nationally. Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon are increasingly planted as growers move from pergolas to vertical trellises, producing fruity, balanced wines with refreshing acidity.
