Worcester

Overview

Worcester is the largest wine district in South Africa by volume, producing roughly a quarter of the country's total wine and spirit output. It sits in the broad Breede River Valley, sheltered by the Hex River, Langeberg, and Riviersonderend Mountains. The hot, dry summers and reliable irrigation from the Breede River and Brandvlei Dam make it ideal for large-scale production.

Chenin Blanc dominates plantings, followed by Colombard and Shiraz. Worcester is also the most important brandy-producing district in the country, with the largest distillery in the southern hemisphere. In recent years, producers have begun bottling more quality wines from mountain slopes, where better drainage and lower yields add concentration.
