Walker Bay

Overview

Walker Bay is a coastal district in the Cape South Coast region, best known internationally for the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley at its heart. Beyond Hemel-en-Aarde, the district includes other wards such as Bot River, Sunday's Glen, and parts of the Stanford area, each with its own take on the maritime climate. The Antarctic Benguela Current runs close to shore, pulling cool air inland and creating a long, slow ripening season.

While Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grab the headlines, Walker Bay also produces fine Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Shiraz. Vineyards are typically small, family-owned, and focused on quality. The combination of ancient soils, persistent sea breezes, and low yields has made the district a benchmark for South African cool-climate wine.
