Overview
The São Francisco Valley stretches through the states of Pernambuco and Bahia in northeastern Brazil, making it one of the closest wine regions to the equator in the world. Intense sunshine and high temperatures are moderated by irrigation from the São Francisco River, allowing vines to ripen quickly and, in many vineyards, to produce two crops per year.
The region is best known for Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, sparkling wines, and tropical-style whites such as Chenin Blanc and Muscat. Large producers including Miolo and Vinícola São Francisco have invested in modern wineries and tourism facilities, drawing visitors to a landscape of palm trees, mango orchards, and irrigated vineyards.
