Elazığ Vineyards
Eastern Anatolia, in the upper Euphrates valley south-west of Lake Hazar

Elazığ

High-altitude vineyards near the cradle of wine, home to Turkey's noble Öküzgözü.

Overview

Elazığ sits at the heart of Eastern Anatolia's wine country, with vineyards typically around 900 to 1,000 metres above sea level on the banks of the Euphrates. A markedly continental climate brings cold winters, warm summers and wide day-night temperature variation that concentrates flavour while preserving acidity.

Limestone, clay and rocky soils retain enough moisture to sustain vines through the dry season, and many old vineyards remain on their own rootstocks, free of phylloxera. The region is celebrated above all for Öküzgözü, with Boğazkere and Narince also playing important roles in its red and white wines.

Key Varietals

  • ÖküzgözüElazığ's signature red, giving medium-bodied wines with vibrant cherry, plum and spice.
  • BoğazkereAdds tannic structure, dark berry fruit and pepper to Elazığ blends.
  • NarinceA white grape with citrus, green apple and floral notes, grown in cooler Elazığ sites.
  • Cabernet SauvignonBlended with local reds to add cassis, structure and ageing potential.
