Overview
Tulbagh lies in a natural basin enclosed by the Winterhoek, Witzenberg, and Obiqua Mountains. The valley was originally part of the Breede River geological system, but under Wine of Origin legislation it sits in the Coastal Region due to its Paarl municipal ties. It is one of the hottest wine areas in South Africa in summer and also records some of the coldest winter nights.
The extreme diurnal temperature range and varied soils suit a broad range of grapes, including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and Chenin Blanc. Old bush vines, some many decades old, are a regional treasure. The historic town of Tulbagh, with its restored Cape Dutch street, is a popular stop on the way to the Cederberg.
