Overview
Transmontano refers to the wines of Trás-os-Montes, the remote northeastern corner of Portugal isolated from the coast by mountain ranges. The region spans a high plateau cut by river valleys, with a harsh continental climate of very cold winters, hot summers, and low rainfall. Vineyards sit between 400 and 1,000 meters on granite and schist soils.
Red wines are rustic and full-bodied, led by Bastardo, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional, while whites from Códega, Gouveio, and Malvasia Fina are fresh and aromatic. The region's isolation has helped preserve ancient varieties and traditional winemaking.
