Ticino

Overview

Ticino is the only Swiss canton entirely south of the Alps, and its Mediterranean-influenced climate makes it the country's warmest wine region. Vineyards climb from around 200 meters near Ascona to over 550 meters on steep Ronchi terraces divided by Monte Ceneri into Sopraceneri and Sottoceneri.

Merlot dominates roughly 80 percent of plantings, producing everything from light fruity reds to powerful barrique-aged wines, plus the fashionable Merlot Bianco white. Indigenous Bondola, known locally as Nostrano, and international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay add further color.
