Overview
Thurgau is best known as the apple canton, but it also holds an important place in Swiss wine as the namesake of Müller-Thurgau, created by Dr. Hermann Müller from Thurgau in 1882. Vineyards lie on the Swiss Plateau between Lake Constance and the rolling hills around Münchwilen, where a cool continental climate shapes crisp, aromatic whites.
Müller-Thurgau leads plantings, producing fragrant, easy-drinking whites with apple and elderflower notes. Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and the local Freisamer are also grown, while the region's moraine and molasse soils give the wines a bright, refreshing character.
