Overview
Thrace sits at the northeastern corner of Greece, bordered by Bulgaria and Turkey and shaped by the Rhodope Mountains and the northern Aegean. After centuries as a focal point of Dionysian worship, its vineyards declined for other crops before a recent quality revival. Today estates in Drama, Kavala, Maroneia and Avdira are gaining recognition for elegant, site-driven wines.
A humid, warm climate with generous rainfall is moderated by altitude and sea influence, giving wines bright acidity and good colour. Indigenous grapes such as Mavroudi and Thrapsathiri grow alongside Assyrtiko, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, producing a small but rising portfolio of distinctive reds and whites.
