Tartu

South Estonia's rolling hills, where family wineries pioneer cold-climate grape growing.

Overview

Tartu County sits in southern Estonia, a region of lakes, forests, and rolling hills that is slightly more continental than the coast. The area around Otepää and Tartu has attracted some of the country's most dedicated viticultural pioneers, who are proving that quality grapes can ripen even at this northern latitude.

Murimäe Veinikelder, Järiste Winery, and Uue-Saaluse Winery are among the producers experimenting with Solaris, Rondo, Pinot Noir, and other cold-hardy varieties. The focus is on small-scale, handcrafted wines, often enjoyed alongside local cheese, rye bread, and forest berries.

Key Varietals

  • SolarisA white hybrid that produces crisp, floral wines in Estonia's cool climate.
  • RondoA red hybrid giving light, cherry-scented wines and rosés.
  • Pinot NoirA classic cool-climate red tested on south-facing hillsides near Tartu.
  • ChardonnayA white variety used for sparkling and still wines in the warmest pockets.
