Tacna Vineyards
Peru's far south, on the Chilean border around the Locumba, Sama, and Caplina valleys

Tacna

Peru's southernmost wine region, where arid border valleys nurture a renaissance of boutique still wines and artisanal Pisco.

Overview

Tacna is the southernmost of Peru's official Pisco regions, stretching along the border with Chile and clustered around three principal valleys: Locumba, Sama, and Caplina. Viticulture here dates back more than four centuries, with colonial bodegas once supplying wine and aguardiente to mining towns across the southern Andes. Today, a new generation of small producers is reviving Tacna's wine identity, crafting boutique reds and Piscos from old Criolla vines and newer plantings.

The climate is subtropical desert, with vineyards ranging from coastal flats to sites above 1,000 meters that experience less humidity and more intense sunlight. Riverbed soils are rocky and varied, mixing silt, clay, and alluvial deposits. Negra Criolla and Italia dominate traditional plantings, while Tannat and other international grapes are gaining ground as winemakers explore the region's potential for concentrated, terroir-driven wines.

Key Varietals

  • Negra CriollaThe historic Criolla red that leads plantings in Tacna, producing rustic, herbaceous wines and Piscos.
  • ItaliaA fragrant Muscat variety prized for aromatic Piscos and fresh, floral white wines in the border valleys.
  • QuebrantaThe classic Peruvian Pisco grape, valued here for its structure and its role in both Puro and Acholado Piscos.
  • TannatA bold red that adapts well to Tacna's warm, dry conditions, adding dark fruit and firm tannins to the region's blends.
