Šumadija Vineyards
Hilly central Serbia between Belgrade, Kragujevac and the Velika Morava River

Šumadija

The woodland heart of Serbia, where rolling hills and a temperate continental climate shape elegant Prokupac and crisp white wines.

Overview

Šumadija stretches across the hilly interior of central Serbia, a region whose name comes from the Serbian word for forest. Vineyards are planted on gently rolling terrain between 150 and 350 meters above sea level, where south-facing slopes catch ample sunshine and cool continental nights preserve acidity. The region has long been known for orchards, plum brandy and a growing circle of modern wineries that are reviving indigenous grapes alongside international varieties.

The flagship red here is Prokupac, Serbia's ancient signature grape, which produces medium-bodied wines with red berry fruit, white pepper and fine tannins. Smederevka, a traditional local white, gives light, refreshing wines with citrus and green apple character, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc add structure and international polish. Historic towns such as Topola, Aranđelovac and Kragujevac anchor a wine route that blends royal heritage, rural hospitality and increasingly ambitious viticulture.
