Overview

Stellenbosch is South Africa's most celebrated wine district, lying in a basin of rugged mountain slopes just east of Cape Town. Founded in 1679, it houses many of the country's most famous estates and pioneered the modern quality movement. Vineyards are tucked between the Stellenbosch, Helderberg, and Simonsberg mountains, where elevation, aspect, and soil variation create a patchwork of distinct terroirs.

The district excels with both red and white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage are flagship reds, while Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc also perform beautifully. Its wine route, one of the oldest in the country, draws visitors to historic towns, Cape Dutch architecture, and restaurants that match the wines to local produce.
