Srem Vineyards
Slopes of Fruška Gora facing the Danube River to the north and the Sava River to the south

Srem

Vojvodina's northern vineyard crescent, where fertile loess, Danube breezes and monastic tradition produce fragrant whites and food-friendly reds.

Overview

Srem lies on the flanks of Fruška Gora in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, a low mountain ridge framed by the Danube to the north and the Sava to the south. Vineyards are planted mainly between 90 and 270 meters above sea level on northern and southern exposures, where the rivers moderate temperature swings and reflect extra sunlight onto the vines. The region is one of Serbia's most historic wine areas, with Benedictine and Orthodox monasteries tending vines for centuries.

Chernozem and loess-rich soils support a broad palette of grapes. Grašac remains the workhorse white, while Frankovka and Portugizer provide crunchy, bright reds for everyday drinking. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot ripen well on warmer sites, and Smederevka adds a crisp, local white accent. The Baroque town of Sremski Karlovci remains the cultural and tasting hub of the region.

Key Varietals

  • GrašacThe most planted white in Srem, giving fresh, lightly floral wines with green apple, lemon and a mineral finish.
  • FrankovkaAlso known as Blaufränkisch, a spicy, medium-bodied red with cranberry, cherry and peppery notes.
  • SmederevkaA native Serbian white producing light, citrusy, easy-drinking wines with crisp acidity.
  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red with blackcurrant and herbaceous notes, rounding out Srem's red wine offer.
