Overview
The South Morava, or Južna Morava, wine region runs through the valleys and basins of southern Serbia, from Leskovac south through Vranje toward the borders with North Macedonia and Kosovo. Vineyards are planted between roughly 250 and 650 meters above sea level on gentle to moderate slopes with southern and southeastern exposures. The climate is warm continental with a Mediterranean touch: mild winters, long sunny summers and dry, golden autumns that allow late-ripening varieties to reach full maturity while keeping acidity fresh.
This is the spiritual home of Prokupac, the ancient Serbian red that produces wines of bright red fruit, white pepper and earthy complexity. Vranac adds darker, more powerful reds, while Tamjanika contributes intensely aromatic whites. Cabernet Sauvignon has also found a comfortable home on the warmer valley floors, producing ripe, rounded wines. Historic towns such as Vranje, Prokuplje and Leskovac anchor a wine route rich in Ottoman heritage, grilled-meat cuisine and revivalist winemaking.
