Overview
Solapur's Akluj area is home to Fratelli Vineyards, one of India's largest privately owned wine estates. The vineyards sit at about 548 meters in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats, where reduced monsoon rainfall and nutrient-poor soils force vines to dig deep.
The rocky, calcareous terrain was deliberately chosen for its resemblance to parts of Chianti, and the strong diurnal temperature shift preserves acidity despite the low latitude. The estate has become a benchmark for premium, structured Indian wines with an Italian sensibility.
