Overview
Wine production around Santa Cruz de la Sierra is concentrated in a transition zone of shallow mountain valleys where the surazo, a cool southern wind, moderates the otherwise tropical climate. Subregions include Samaipata, Vallegrande, Saipina, Comarapa, and Mairana, each with distinct elevations and exposures that allow quality viticulture at unexpectedly low latitudes.
The valleys are among the coolest wine areas in Bolivia despite lying at roughly 18 degrees south, with Pedro Giménez and Torrontés standing out among whites and Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon showing unusual aromatic expression. The nearby El Fuerte UNESCO site and the bohemian town of Samaipata make this one of Bolivia's most attractive wine tourism destinations.
