Overview
Samogitia, or Žemaitija, is Lithuania's northwestern region, stretching from the central lowlands toward the Baltic coast. It is known for its strong regional identity, distinctive dialect, and historic resistance to outside rule, with Telšiai as its cultural capital.
The region's relatively mild winters and strong maritime influence made it the site of one of Lithuania's first modern commercial vineyards, planted near Plungė in 2009 with Solaris and Rondo. Today, small growers along the coastal fringe continue to experiment with cold-hardy hybrids, while local artisans also produce apple, sea buckthorn, and berry wines.
