Robertson

Overview

Robertson lies in the Breede River Valley, roughly 160 kilometres east of Cape Town. The district is warmer and drier than the coastal regions, but cooling southeasterly winds from the Indian Ocean bring moisture and moderate the heat, especially in the south-eastern areas around Bonnievale. Limestone-rich soils are a defining feature, contributing to the minerality and elegance of the wines.

The region built its reputation on Chardonnay, sparkling wine, and quality whites, but Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon have become increasingly important. Irrigation from the Breede River is essential in this low-rainfall valley. Historic estates and a strong focus on value have made Robertson a reliable source of both everyday and premium South African wines.
