Inland lakeland, around Tampere

Pirkanmaa

Finland's lake district meets experimental winemaking, where hardy vines are tested among forests and inland waters.

Overview

Pirkanmaa lies in the Finnish Lakeland, with Tampere at its heart between Lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. The continental influence here is stronger than on the coast, bringing colder winters, warmer summer days, and a shorter frost-free period that challenges any vine.

Grape growing is rare, and most local wine-like products are made from berries and fruits. A few experimental growers have trialed cold-hardy hybrids such as Zilga, Rondo, and Solaris on sheltered sites, contributing to Finland's broader research into inland viticulture.

Key Varietals

  • ZilgaA hardy red grape that ripens early, making it one of the safer bets for inland Finland.
  • RondoA red hybrid that tolerates cold winters and produces light, refreshing reds and rosés.
  • SolarisAn aromatic white hybrid grown on the warmest, most sheltered lakeside plots.
  • Hasanski SladkiA Russian-bred white grape that handles severe cold and yields simple, floral wines.
