Patagonia Vineyards
Los Lagos Region, Chile

Patagonia

Chile's emerging cool-climate frontier, where vineyards push toward the southern edge of the wine world.

Overview

Chilean Patagonia represents the country's newest and most southerly wine frontier, with experimental vineyards around Osorno and the Los Lagos region near 40 degrees south. The climate is cool, wet, and strongly influenced by the Pacific Ocean, making viticulture a serious challenge.

Plantings remain small, focused on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Producers such as Viña San Pedro with its 1865 Patagonia line and smaller boutique projects are exploring the potential of these extreme latitudes, producing wines with bright acidity and a distinct cool-climate character.

Key Varietals

  • Pinot NoirA light, high-acid red that shows promise in Patagonia's cool climate.
  • ChardonnayA crisp, mineral white with citrus and saline notes.
  • RieslingAn aromatic white that retains acidity in the cool southern summers.
  • Sauvignon BlancA fresh, zesty white from the wettest, coolest sites.
