Paarl

Overview

Paarl sits in the Berg River valley, framed by the dramatic granite outcrop of Paarl Rock and the surrounding Drakenstein Mountains. It is one of South Africa's oldest wine districts, with a winemaking heritage stretching back to the late 17th century. The warm Mediterranean climate, diverse elevations, and range of soils allow producers to craft everything from rich red blends to crisp whites.

Shiraz and Pinotage have long been Paarl calling cards, often made in ripe, generous styles. The district is also home to historic co-operatives and renowned private estates, with a growing focus on site-specific wines. Its broad valley floor and surrounding foothills make it an important centre of volume and quality alike.
