Öland Vineyards
Long limestone island off Sweden's southeastern coast, in the Baltic Sea

Öland

A windswept island of alvar and limestone where hardy vines capture the bright, briny essence of the Baltic.

Overview

Öland is a narrow, sun-exposed island in the Baltic Sea, famous for its unique alvar landscape of thin soils over limestone bedrock. The maritime climate brings cool summers and mild winters by Swedish standards, while constant wind and low humidity help keep fungal pressure down. Wannborga Vingård near Köpingsvik is the island's best-known producer and has been making wine since the early 2000s.

Vineyards here sit on calcareous soils that drain quickly and lend a mineral streak to the wines. Producers work with aromatic white PIWI varieties and small amounts of red hybrids, and also craft fortified and dessert styles. Öland's combination of historic landscapes, seaside charm, and pioneering viticulture makes it a compelling stop on any Swedish wine itinerary.

Key Varietals

  • SolarisThe workhorse white hybrid, ripening reliably on Öland's sun-exposed limestone soils.
  • OrionAn aromatic white hybrid contributing floral and tropical notes to Öland blends.
  • PhoenixA disease-resistant white hybrid that performs well in the island's dry, windy summers.
  • Seyval BlancA cool-climate French hybrid valued for crisp acidity and citrus character.
